add2watchlist: eldritch anisette, 🎵 november tracks, & a slipknot skirt...
Between your fingers, what did you see
That seemed to you so naked and willing?
Blot out the mouth: Open and frightening
This silent woman does not speak
Eldritch Anisette was a Newark-based 90s emo band. every few weeks or so, I revisit a three-song 7” of theirs on YouTube. on my way to work this morning silly crocodile tears rolled down my face as Courtney Ellen Miller sang-screamed “I will not be your victim” from the track “Dissection of Silence.” a masterpiece. the lyrics are simple and raw, a genuineness most older emo has.
I recently started Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist and can’t put it down—similar to my listening obsession with Eldritch Anisette. both the music and book share a common theme of critiquing societal norms and expectations surrounding womxn. Gay and Miller express themselves with directness, awareness of imperfection, and honesty, each through completely different mediums. as a writer, this is a welcome reminder of the range of self expression I can exercise, plus the versatile voices feminist writing and thought can encompass.
